Shaheed El-Hafed (Refugee Camps), 24 April 2024 (SPS) - The Polisario Front reiterated Wednesday its demand to the United Nations Security Council to take urgent measures to enable the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to fulfill its mission aimed at enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise its right to self-determination and independence through a free, fair, and impartial referendum.

This came in a speech by the President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, during his supervision of the opening of the fourth ordinary session of the National Secretariat of the Polisario Front. He stressed that "the Sahrawi Republic is ready to end the ongoing conflict with the Kingdom of Morocco, in line with the goals and principles of the African Union, especially the principle of respecting the existing borders at independence."

On the other hand, Mr. Ghali said that the Sahrawi Republic has continuously warned, and today it renews its warning, of the danger of the expansionist and blind aggressive approach of the Moroccan occupation state, which has engaged itself in the service of known colonial and expansionist agendas, making itself a functional instrument for sowing destruction and spreading tension, especially through supporting and encouraging transcontinental organized crime gangs and terrorist groups, including flooding the region with drugs.

"Once again," he adds, "the Sahrawi Republic calls on the neighboring peoples and countries to intensify mechanisms of consultation, coordination, and cooperation to confront these imminent risks to peace, security, and stability in our region."

When addressing the general international situation, he pointed out that the current phase is characterized by worrisome transformations in the neighboring region of the Sahel and the Sahara, with a "serious increase in security threats, instability situation, manifestations of foreign intervention, and possibilities of escalation and the growing activities of terrorist groups."

Among the most prominent features of the current situation in which this session is being held, Mr. Ghali says, are those related to the international arena and the significant and successive developments it witnesses, led by the Zionist barbaric aggression against the Palestinian people, especially in the wounded Gaza Strip, and the increasing signs of comprehensive escalation in the Middle East region resulting from it.

In this context, President Brahim Ghali praised the "spirit of nationalism, consensus, and determination" shown by the Sahrawi people in continuing its liberation march, sending a message of solidarity and support to the Sahrawi civilian prisoners steadfast in Moroccan prisons and their families.

On the external level, he highlighted the continued efforts of the Sahrawi Republic to enhance its position on the world map and to assume its role and responsibilities as a founding member of the African Union, while the legal and judicial battle achieves important results and developments.
