Galicia (Spain), May 23, 2025 (SPS) - The Workers' Union of Saguia el-Hamra and Rio de Oro (UGTSARIO) is participating in the 9th Congress of the Galician Trade Union Confederation (Confederación Sindical Galega), following an invitation from the host organization.
The Congress served as an opportunity to renew solidarity with the Sahrawi people and their just cause, while reaffirming the commitment to strengthen cooperation with the Sahrawi Workers' Union.
Maaouina Salma, Regional Secretary of the Workers' Union in the wilaya of Auserd, who represented Union Secretary General Nafei Ahmed Mohamed at the event, expressed gratitude to the Galician Trade Union Confederation for extending the invitation. She highlighted the suffering of the Sahrawi people under occupation and refugee conditions, providing detailed accounts of the human rights situation in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
The Sahrawi delegate informed participants about the roles and responsibilities undertaken by the Workers' Union in defending Sahrawi laborers' rights under its new leadership, elected during the Union's 10th Congress held in April.
Maaouina Salma praised the ongoing efforts of allied trade unions, particularly those in Galicia, in supporting the Sahrawi cause and amplifying the voice of the struggling Sahrawi people. She emphasized the strong cooperative ties between the Galician Trade Union and UGTSARIO.
The Sahrawi delegation includes Bashir Lehdad, member of UGTSARIO, who is accompanying Maaouina Salma during the Congress proceedings.
