Former Uruguayan President José Mujica, friend of Sahrawi people, passes away

Uruguay, May 14, 2025 (SPS) – Former Uruguayan President José Mujica (2010–2015) passed away on Tuesday at the age of 89 after a long battle with cancer.

Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi confirmed the news and mourned him on X, saying: "We will miss you dearly, dear old man. Thank you for everything you gave us and for your deep love for your people."

Mujica will be remembered as a humble politician who lived without luxury, fully embodying the spirit of the working class in Latin America. He never succumbed to impossible electoral promises and truly led by example, living as an ordinary person whom the people saw as one of their own.
