Chile, 26 October 2026 (SPS) – A lecture on the historical and legal dimensions of the Sahrawi cause and the obstacles to achieving a just solution guaranteeing the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence was held at the Popular Peasant School in Curaco de Vélez, southern Chile.

The lecture was delivered by the Polisario Front Representative in Chile, Hafdella Sheddad Brahim, who reviewed the unfinished decolonization process in Western Sahara and the Sahrawi people’s struggle to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination.

The speaker stressed that Western Sahara remains a territory whose decolonization has not been completed, and that its future must be determined through the free expression of the Sahrawi people’s will, in accordance with the United Nations Charter and relevant international resolutions.

He also addressed the consequences of the Moroccan occupation, including displacement and exile, human rights violations in the occupied territories, and the exploitation of natural resources, as well as the continued failure to organize a referendum on self-determination under UN auspices.

The lecture further highlighted the judgment issued by the Court of Justice of the European Union on 4 October 2024, which reaffirmed that Western Sahara is separate and distinct from Morocco. The speaker also underscored the role of the African Union and its founding principles, particularly respect for borders inherited from colonialism and peoples’ right to determine their political future.

The event forms part of solidarity initiatives and awareness-raising activities on the Sahrawi cause in Chile, promoting dialogue on decolonization and peoples’ right to freedom and independence.
