Algiers, 10 October 2026 (SPS) –Ambassador to Algeria, member of the National Secretariat, Khadri Addouh, has issued an urgent appeal to international bodies and organizations to intervene to save the lives of Sahrawi political prisoners on hunger strike in Moroccan prisons.
The appeal was made during a press conference held by the ambassador at the Information Centre in Algiers, where he briefed Algerian media on the situation of Sahrawi civilian prisoners and the conditions they face, including neglect, psychological and emotional pressure, and what he described as attempts by Moroccan authorities to pressure them into concessions. He also highlighted the suffering of their families, who are prevented from visiting them.
Khadri Addouh praised the steadfastness of Sahrawi prisoners in Moroccan jails and their commitment to the principles and aspirations of their people for freedom and independence, despite the difficult conditions they endure.
The ambassador recalled the campaign being conducted by the Sahrawi people to demand the release of Sahrawi political prisoners. He noted the involvement of several international human rights organizations and bodies in supporting the campaign and commended Algeria’s position in support of international law and legitimacy.
He clarified that the prisoners’ hunger strike comes at a time when the Western Sahara question is receiving considerable attention at the highest international forums, including the United Nations Security Council, the UN General Assembly and the Fourth Committee, which deals with decolonization.
Khadri Addouh renewed his call on the international community to assume its responsibilities and take urgent action to protect Sahrawi prisoners, ensure their safety, end their suffering and respond to demands for their release.
He also called for the occupied territories to be opened to the press, international observers and human rights organizations, noting the tight restrictions imposed on these areas.
