Berlin (Germany), 7 October 2026 (SPS) – The International Human Rights Association in Berlin has called for the immediate and unconditional release of nine Sahrawi activists who have been on hunger strike since 23 September in Moroccan prisons, urging the German federal government and international human rights organizations to act to protect their health and freedom.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the organization said the hunger strike constitutes a peaceful protest against human rights violations against the Gdeim Izik group prisoners, expressing its full solidarity with them and holding the Moroccan authorities responsible for their physical and psychological well-being.

The association also called for the immediate release of the Gdeim Izik prisoners and urged Morocco and European states to fulfill their human rights responsibilities.

It further called for the full implementation of recommendations issued by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and the UN Committee against Torture, which called on Morocco in 2023 to release the prisoners and reaffirmed their positions in May 2026.

The association urged EU member states to adopt a clear position on human rights violations in Western Sahara and expressed deep concern over the deteriorating health of the nine hunger strikers, renewing its appeal to the German government and international human rights organizations to act to safeguard their health and freedom.
