Algiers, September 30, 2026 (SPS) – Sahrawi official Oubi Buchraya El Bashir, Special Adviser to the President of the Republic for Natural Resources and Legal Affairs, stressed that the international community’s responsibility to protect and assist Sahrawi refugees remains closely linked to completing the decolonization process of Western Sahara and enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
Speaking to France 24, Mr. Buchraya recalled that the Sahrawi refugee camps in southwestern Algeria were established following the mass displacement of Sahrawi civilians after the Moroccan invasion of Western Sahara in 1975.
He said that the continued displacement of Sahrawi refugees entails an ongoing international responsibility, under international humanitarian law, to provide protection and humanitarian assistance. He also expressed concern over the significant decline in humanitarian aid in recent years and its impact on vulnerable refugees.
The Sahrawi official called on the United Nations and the international community to fulfil their obligations toward Sahrawi refugees, stressing that the Polisario Front remains committed to cooperation with the UN to achieve a democratic solution and complete the decolonization of Western Sahara through the exercise of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence.
