New York (United States), 22 September 2026 (SPS) – The high-level general debate of the 81st ordinary session of the United Nations General Assembly began today, Tuesday, at UN Headquarters in New York, under the theme: “Restoring Trust and Managing Transformation: A United Nations for All.”
In his latest report on the “Question of Western Sahara,” dated 31 July 2026 and submitted to the 81st session of the General Assembly, the UN Secretary-General noted that the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee) of the General Assembly and the Special Committee on the Situation with Regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples address Western Sahara as a decolonization issue.
The Sahrawi cause will feature in statements delivered by heads of state and government and heads of delegations participating in the General Assembly’s high-level general debate, as well as in the deliberations of the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee), whose work is scheduled to begin at the start of October.
A Sahrawi delegation is accompanying the proceedings of the 81st ordinary session of the General Assembly, headed by Mr. Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, and comprising Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, member of the National Secretariat, Polisario Front Representative to the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO, and Mr. Malainin Salama, Adviser at the Polisario Front’s Mission to the United Nations.
The Sahrawi delegation will hold meetings with delegations from brotherly and friendly countries and other participating delegations to brief them on the latest developments concerning the national cause and exchange views on ways to strengthen bilateral relations and other issues of common interest.
