Shaheed El Hafed, 27 July 2026 (SPS) –Member of the National Secretariat, Speaker of the National Council, Mr. Bachir Mustapha Sayed, has sent a letter to the President of the Spanish Congress of Deputies, Ms. Francina Armengol, expressing the National Council's deep appreciation for the humanitarian and solidarity-based positions demonstrated by the Spanish Parliament towards the Sahrawi people.
He stressed that these positions reflect the deep historical and humanitarian ties between the Sahrawi and Spanish peoples.
The Speaker praised the attention shown by the President of the Spanish Congress during her reception of the children participating in the "Holidays in Peace" programme at the Spanish Parliament. He noted that her address to the children in their own language and to recall her memories of visiting the Sahrawi refugee camps conveyed a powerful humanitarian message, reaffirming the enduring bonds of friendship and solidarity between the two peoples and strengthening the foundations for future relations based on mutual respect and cooperation.
The letter further stated that the humanitarian initiatives and positions adopted by Spain's legislative institution represent a beacon of hope that reinforces the Sahrawi people's confidence in the strength of the historic relationship between the two peoples. It also reflects the continued presence of the voice of justice and international legitimacy within Spanish institutions.
The Speaker also welcomed the President's recent statements reaffirming this approach, considering them an important contribution to mitigating the impact of the Spanish Government's biased political positions, which have caused disappointment among the Sahrawi people in recent years. He stressed that the bonds of brotherhood and friendship between the Sahrawi and Spanish peoples are stronger than temporary political positions.
In the same context, the Speaker drew the President of the Spanish Congress's attention to the grave humanitarian situation facing Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan occupation prisons, particularly civilian prisoner Naâma Asfari and his fellow prisoners, who continue to endure serious and systematic violations of their fundamental rights. He noted that several of them remain on an open-ended hunger strike in protest against their inhumane conditions of detention, a situation that poses a serious threat to their lives and requires urgent action.
