Emilia-Romagna (Italy), 22 July 2026 (SPS) – The Sahrawi delegation currently on a working visit to Italy continues its political and solidarity activities by taking part in a major event organized by the authorities of the Emilia-Romagna Region in honor of Sahrawi children participating in the Holidays in Peace programme.
The Sahrawi delegation includes Ghaouth Mamouni, Governor of El Aaiun Wilaya; Mohamed Cheikh Mohamed Lahbib, Governor of Dakhla Wilaya; Ali Omar, Officer for External Relations at the Union of Students of Saguia El Hamra and Rio de Oro (UESARIO); and Fatma Mahfoud, Polisario Front Representative to Italy.
The event, organized by the Polisario Front Representation in Italy in coordination with the regional authorities, was attended by prominent political and institutional figures, led by Ms. Barbara Lori, Deputy President of the Emilia-Romagna Regional Council, and Mr. Luca Rizzo Nervo, Regional Minister for Cooperation. Also in attendance were members of parliament, mayors, the President of the Association of Solidarity Organizations with the Sahrawi People, as well as representatives and members of Italian associations supporting the Sahrawi cause.
The gathering reflected the depth and strength of the friendship and solidarity between the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Sahrawi people, as demonstrated by the high-level participation and the rich programme, which featured a variety of political, cultural, and solidarity activities.
In their addresses, members of the Sahrawi delegation expressed their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the regional authorities and the Italian solidarity movement for their steadfast support of the Sahrawi people's struggle for freedom and independence. They also briefed participants on the latest developments concerning the Sahrawi national cause and the humanitarian situation in the Sahrawi refugee camps.
For their part, the executive and legislative authorities of the Emilia-Romagna Region reaffirmed their commitment to continuing their support for the Sahrawi people and to strengthening cooperation and solidarity with the institutions of the Sahrawi Republic. They reiterated their support for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence.
The event featured a solidarity gathering in support of Sahrawi political prisoner Naâma Asfari, expressing backing for the "Dignity Strike" he is carrying out in Moroccan occupation prisons, as well as solidarity with all Sahrawi civilian prisoners. A documentary film was also screened, highlighting the visit made by a political delegation from the region to the Sahrawi refugee camps.
The Sahrawi delegation is expected to continue its visit with additional engagements in other regions and provinces across Italy.
