Barcelona (Spain), 20 July 2026 (SPS) – The Sahrawi community in Catalonia took part in a protest rally in Barcelona to call on the international community to respect the Sahrawi people's right to freedom and independence and to demand the immediate release of Sahrawi civilian prisoner Naâma Asfari, whose life is at imminent risk due to his month-long hunger strike in the Kenitra prison in Morocco.

The demonstrators carried banners calling for the release of all Sahrawi civilian prisoners, foremost among them Naâma Asfari, who are living in harsh conditions inside Moroccan occupation prisons.

During the rally, the Representative of the Polisario Front in Catalonia, Mohamed Salem Laabeid, addressed the gathering, recalling Spain's responsibility towards the Sahrawi people and their cause, which does not lapse with time, given Spain's status as the legal administering power of the territory until the Sahrawi people exercise their right to self-determination.

At the conclusion of the demonstration, a statement of solidarity with Sahrawi prisoner Naâma Asfari and his fellow prisoners was read out. The participants called on the United Nations, human rights organisations and bodies to exert pressure on the Moroccan occupying state to secure the immediate release of all Sahrawi civilian prisoners.
