Kampala (Uganda), July 14, 2026 (SPS) – The Ugandan Solidarity Movement with the Sahrawi People on Monday issued a statement expressing its full solidarity with the Sahrawi people as part of the national and international campaign in support of Sahrawi civilian prisoners held in Moroccan prisons, particularly Sahrawi civilian prisoner Naâma Asfari, who is on hunger strike in protest against his continued detention and the violations he has endured.

In its statement, issued in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, on July 13, 2026, the movement reaffirmed its support for the Sahrawi people's legitimate struggle for justice, dignity, and respect for human rights, as well as for the exercise of their inalienable right to self-determination, a right guaranteed under international law.

The statement expressed deep concern over the humanitarian conditions faced by Sahrawi political prisoners and human rights defenders in Moroccan prisons, highlighting in particular the alarming health condition of Naâma Asfari, who continues his hunger strike in protest against what the movement described as his arbitrary detention. It noted that his case reflects the suffering of many Sahrawis who have chosen to defend their people's rights through peaceful means.

The movement renewed its unwavering support for the Sahrawi people and called on the international community, civil society organizations, and all human rights defenders to intensify pressure and solidarity efforts to ensure that the Sahrawi people can exercise their right to self-determination and independence, while also working to secure the release of Sahrawi civilian prisoners.
