Irish Trade Union Congress calls for Sahrawi people to exercise its legitimate rights

Dublin (Ireland), 27 May 2026 (SPS) – The Secretary-General of the General Union of Workers of Saguia el-Hamra and Rio de Oro (UGTSAARIO), Mr. Nafie Ahmed Mohamed, affirmed that ending the suffering of the Sahrawi people lies in resolving the question of Western Sahara fundamentally through the implementation of international legitimacy and respect for the principle of the right to self-determination.

He made these remarks during his participation in the Irish Trade Union Congress.

The Irish Trade Union Conference, which includes 42 trade unions and labor organizations in the country, listened to a presentation by the workers’ union on the Sahrawi labor experience and the resistance struggle of workers under occupation. Mr. Nafie Ahmed Mohamed also provided a briefing on the Western Sahara issue and its latest developments.

For his part, the Polisario Front representative to Ireland, Mr. Sidi Breika, reviewed the historical course of the Sahrawi struggle, highlighting that for more than 50 years, the Sahrawi people have faced tremendous challenges and difficulties that have not deterred it from continuing its struggle to achieve freedom and independence.

The congress devoted two working sessions to the Sahrawi and Palestinian causes.
