Dili (Timor-Leste) 21 May 2026 - The Saharawi Republic (SADR) Ambassador, Mr. Abba Malainin, attended Wednesday Timor-Leste’s celebrations of its 24th Independence Restoration Day on May 20, 2026 in the capital Dili, marking the historic date in 2002 when the country regained its sovereignty.
The nationwide celebrations were held under the central theme, "Together we will build a country that is increasingly just, inclusive, and resilient."

The occasion reflected Timor-Leste’s remarkable journey of peace, stability, prosperity, resilience, nation-building, and progress, as well as its continued commitment to regional cooperation and its pivotal role within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as the newest member state of ASEAN.
In his Independence Day address, the President honoured Veterans of the National Liberation and the memory of fallen patriots. The Head of State described today's Timor-Leste as "an oasis of peace, tranquillity, security, and tolerance in a world marked by wars, energy crises, and natural disasters," contrasting the stability enjoyed at home with growing global instability.

“Timor-Leste, as a Nation that deeply understands the value of peace, will continue to defend an international order based on these principles, contributing, within its possibilities, to a culture of dialogue, reconciliation, and the construction of peaceful solutions.” He added.
The Saharawi Republic (SADR) Ambassador, Mr. Abba Malainin seized the opportunity and conveyed the congratulations of the Saharawi President, Mr. Brahim Ghali and the Saharawi Government to the President of Timor-Leste, H.E. Dr. Jose Ramos Horta and to the Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao.
