Ljubljana (Slovenia), May 18, 2026 (SPS) – Aminatou Haidar was received at the Slovenian Parliament as part of a meeting dedicated to discussing developments in the human rights situation in Western Sahara and strengthening the presence of the Sahrawi cause within political and human rights circles in Slovenia.

During the meeting, Ms. Haidar delivered a detailed presentation on the violations suffered by civilians in the occupied territories, including restrictions on public freedoms, the suppression of demonstrations, and the targeting of human rights activists. She also addressed the situation of Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons and the conditions of their detention.

She further discussed the issue of natural resources in Western Sahara, considering it one of the central aspects of the conflict. She referred to the plundering and exploitation of these resources in collusion with certain European governments and companies, in violation of international law and relevant European court rulings.

Ms. Haidar criticized what she described as double standards among some international actors in dealing with human rights issues, arguing that violations committed in Western Sahara are often overlooked compared to other issues that receive broader attention on the European and international agenda, thereby affecting the credibility of international human rights discourse.
