Berlin (Germany), April 28, 2026 (SPS) – The German government has confirmed that its position on the Western Sahara issue is well known and unchanged, stressing that the legal status of Western Sahara remains unresolved and is the subject of an ongoing negotiation process under the auspices of the United Nations.

In press statements made on Monday, the spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry, Ms. Kathrin Deschauer, on the eve of the German Foreign Minister’s visit to North Africa, stated that the negotiation process under UN auspices is important, as it remains the only way to reach a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution.

In response to a journalist’s question about UN recommendations calling for a referendum to resolve the Western Sahara issue, and the German government’s position on this approach based on public consultation, the spokesperson said that her government’s stance is based on the conviction that the final status of Western Sahara has not yet been determined and that a negotiation process is ongoing under the umbrella of the United Nations.
