London, March 7, 2026 (SPS) – The United Kingdom Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that British consumers are not misled about the origin of food products, stressing that food labels must accurately reflect their true source, particularly for products originating from Western Sahara.
This statement was made by Angela Eagle, Minister of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, in a parliamentary response published in the UK Parliament’s official record (Hansard) regarding food labeling policies in the British market.
Eagle stated that the government is committed to ensuring the accuracy of information provided to consumers and preventing misleading labeling, in accordance with the retained rules based on EU Regulation No. 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers. The regulation stipulates that food labels must not contain any information that could mislead consumers, including details concerning the origin or source of products.
The minister pointed out that the United Kingdom considers that when information is provided about the origin of food products grown or produced in Western Sahara, such information must be accurate, and labels must not indicate that these products originate from Morocco.
