Shaheed El Hafed, 24 January 2026 (SPS) — The National Union of Sahrawi Women (NUSW) expressed its condemnation of the arbitrary measures taken by the Moroccan occupation authorities against human rights activist Aminatou Haidar.

In a statement, the Union voiced its strong denunciation of the arbitrary actions targeting Sahrawi human rights activist Aminatou Haidar, considering them a blatant and systematic violation of international human rights instruments, foremost among them the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The Union added that what activist Aminatou Haidar has been subjected to—namely arbitrary restrictions on her freedom of movement, politically motivated harassment, and direct targeting because of her peaceful positions and human rights activities—constitutes a clear breach of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which guarantees every individual the right to freedom of movement and to leave and return to any country. It also represents a violation of the principles for the protection of human rights defenders adopted by the United Nations.

The National Union of Sahrawi Women held the Moroccan occupation authorities fully responsible for her physical and psychological safety, calling for the immediate cessation of all forms of harassment and violations against her and against all Sahrawi activists.

The statement also called on the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Special Procedures, and international human rights organizations to intervene urgently to monitor the human rights situation in the occupied Sahrawi territories and to put an end to the state of impunity.
