Geneva (Switzerland), September 30, 2025 (SPS) - Sahrawi human rights activist Ghalia Djimi confirmed that the silence of the international community has encouraged Morocco to persist in its violations of human rights against the Sahrawi people in the occupied cities of Western Sahara.
During her intervention at a session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Ghalia Djimi highlighted Morocco's continued disregard for implementing the recommendations it received during previous Universal Periodic Reviews, specifically those related to human rights in Western Sahara.
Ghalia Djimi affirmed that Morocco has still not committed to implementing fundamental recommendations concerning the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence, freedom of association, freedom of expression, and the right to peaceful assembly. She pointed out that Sahrawi human rights defenders and activists continue to be deprived of these fundamental rights because of their political positions, which she described as "blatant discrimination that obstructs the protection and promotion of human rights in a non-self-governing territory."
She expressed deep concern regarding the ignored recommendations related to disclosing the fate of disappeared Sahrawis, providing redress for victims and their families, and ensuring fair trials for Sahrawi political prisoners.
She concluded her intervention by calling on the Human Rights Council and the international community to pressure Morocco to effectively implement the recommendations and to ensure that perpetrators of grave violations are held accountable, stressing that the silence of the international community encourages the continuation of these violations.
