New York (United Nations), 28 September 2025 (SPS) — During Saturday’s high-level session of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Mauritania reiterated Saturday its backing for United Nations efforts regarding the Western Sahara question.

“We renew our support for the UN efforts on Western Sahara,” said the Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, at the podium of the UN General Assembly.

Leaders from several countries have continued expressing support for the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and their just cause, notably the Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Eduardo Rodriguez, who reaffirmed his country’s solidarity with the Sahrawi cause.

“We stand in solidarity with the Sahrawi people and their right to self-determination,” affirmed Rodriguez in his speech.

Leaders from Namibia, South Africa and Spain also expressed their support for the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination during their General Assembly speeches, emphasizing the need to resolve the Western Sahara conflict in line with international law and UN resolutions.

They conveyed their commitment to continue supporting UN efforts aimed at strengthening international peace and security.
