Geneva (UN Human Rights Council) 11 September 2025 (SPS) – The Sahrawi human rights defender, Mrs. Elghalia Djimi, delivered an intervention yesterday, Wednesday, before the plenary session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, under item 2 of the agenda concerning the report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, in which she shed light on the grave violations suffered by the Sahrawi people under Moroccan illegal occupation for more than half a century.
The Sahrawi activist expressed “deep concern over the continued Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara, and its persistent refusal to comply with United Nations resolutions and international law,” adding that the Sahrawi people continue to suffer from various forms of serious violations, and calling for “an end to the impunity still enjoyed by Moroccan officials to this day, and I am one of the survivors of enforced disappearance,” she recalled.
The Sahrawi defender drew attention to Morocco’s ongoing refusal of the High Commissioner’s request to visit the territory of Western Sahara, considering that this position “reflects Morocco’s unwillingness to allow independent monitoring of the human rights situation in the territory, and increases concerns regarding the human rights situation of the Sahrawi people.”
Elghalia Djimi stressed “the importance of implementing the resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly of the United Nations regarding Western Sahara, including the holding of a referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people and supporting the peaceful struggle of this people.”
In conclusion of her intervention, she underlined “the importance of the role of the High Commissioner in monitoring human rights violations in Western Sahara and urging the Moroccan authorities to respect their international obligations in order to ensure stability in the Maghreb region and the Sahel.” (SPS)
