New York (UN), 15 October 2026 (SPS) – Tanzania has reaffirmed its support for the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination, calling for the resumption of direct negotiations without delay or preconditions to achieve a just and lasting political solution.

Addressing the UN General Assembly’s Fourth Committee, Tanzania described Western Sahara as Africa’s last colony and highlighted the decades-long suffering of Sahrawi refugees in camps near Tindouf, who continue to await a free, fair and impartial referendum on self-determination.

The Tanzanian delegation stressed that the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination is guaranteed under international law and relevant UN resolutions and cannot be subject to negotiation or compromise.

Tanzania urged the parties concerned to resume peaceful, direct negotiations aimed at reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, in accordance with Security Council Resolution 1754 and subsequent relevant resolutions.
