Paris, 2 October 2026 (SPS) – The Movement Against Racism and for Friendship Between Peoples (MRAP) expressed deep concern on Wednesday over the situation of nine Sahrawi political prisoners from the Gdeim Izik group, who began an open-ended hunger strike on September 23, in Moroccan prisons to protest detention conditions and demand self-determination.
In a statement released in Paris, the French organization urged the French President and government to act swiftly to ensure Morocco, as an occupying power, respects international humanitarian law—specifically the Fourth Geneva Convention—and complies with UN human rights resolutions.
MRAP denounced Morocco's refusal to allow the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) access to the prisoners, as well as the barring of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights visits to Western Sahara since 2015. Reaffirming Western Sahara's status as a non-self-governing territory awaiting decolonization, the movement warned against any attempts to alter MINURSO's mandate away from organizing a self-determination referendum.
