New York (United Nations), September 24, 2026 (SPS) – In her address during the high-level general debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of the Republic of Namibia, reaffirmed her country's support for the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and underscored the responsibility of the United Nations to achieve a just and lasting solution to the question of Western Sahara.
The Namibian President stressed that the United Nations bears the responsibility of advancing efforts towards a just and lasting solution to the question of Western Sahara, in accordance with the UN Charter and relevant resolutions concerning decolonization and the right to self-determination. She expressed her country's support for the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) and for the holding of a UN-backed referendum in Western Sahara, enabling the Sahrawi people to finally exercise their right to self-determination.
She called for the full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted in October 2025, which reaffirmed the need for a lasting and mutually acceptable political solution between the Polisario Front and the Kingdom of Morocco.
