Occupied El-Aaiun, September 24, 2026 (SPS) – Sahrawi civilian prisoner Mohamed El-Bachir Boutenkiza is suffering from a deterioration in his health due to medical neglect by the Moroccan occupation authorities, according to the Sahrawi League for the Protection of Political Prisoners in Moroccan Prisons.
According to the prisoner’s family, he has been suffering from severe bleeding caused by complications from hemorrhoids for many years. His condition has recently worsened, resulting in acute bleeding. Despite repeatedly requesting to be examined by a specialist outside the prison and to undergo surgery to end his suffering, the prison administration has only provided him with pain-relieving injections three times a day. This measure does not treat the underlying condition but merely provides temporary relief from the pain, leaving his suffering ongoing with no prospect of a solution.
The family also stated that he suffers from arthritis and chronic rheumatism, and has faced prolonged medical neglect since 2014. It was from that time that symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis began to appear. However, the prison administration refused to allow him to see a specialist outside the prison and, throughout these years, limited treatment to painkillers, which have had a direct impact on his liver function, further increasing the seriousness of his health condition.
