Brisbane (Australia), 13 September 2026 (SPS) – The Australian city of Brisbane hosted today, Sunday, a conference on Western Sahara entitled “Western Sahara: Africa’s Last Colony,” as part of the activities of the Ecosocialism 2026 conference, held from 11 to 13 September under the theme “Resistance, Decolonization, Liberation.”
The conference, attended by the Representative of the Polisario Front in Australia, Mr. Mohamed Fadel Kamal, provided an opportunity to highlight the Sahrawi people’s struggle to end colonialism and occupation.
The event opened with a screening of the documentary Western Sahara: The Worst Police State I’ve Ever Seen, which provided background on the invasion and occupation of Western Sahara and highlighted systematic repression and serious human rights violations in the occupied territories, alongside the continued plundering and exploitation of the territory’s natural resources by the Moroccan occupying regime.
The Representative of the Polisario Front in Australia gave a briefing on the latest developments in the Sahrawi cause, stressing that the Sahrawi people remains steadfast in confronting the occupation, remains committed to its right to freedom, dignity and independence, and determined to continue its struggle until the decolonization of Western Sahara is completed.
He stressed that any efforts aimed at imposing a solution contrary to the will of the Sahrawi people are doomed to failure, given that the Sahrawi people is the party entitled to determine the future of the territory, and that any lasting and just solution can only be achieved by respecting its free will and right to self-determination in accordance with international legitimacy.
The attendees expressed their solidarity with the Sahrawi people and its just struggle for freedom, self-determination and independence.
Several participants stressed the need to move from expressions of solidarity to concrete action, announcing their determination to intensify awareness campaigns and action against companies involved in exploiting and plundering the natural resources of occupied Western Sahara, and to continue exerting pressure for respect for international law and the rights of the Sahrawi people.
The Ecosocialism 2026 conference in Brisbane brings together activists, movements and figures interested in liberation, anti-colonialism, and social and environmental justice. This year’s edition focuses on resistance, decolonization and liberation, and their links to contemporary global struggles.
