Erfurt (Germany), September 7, 2026 (SPS) – The activities of the third and final day of the awareness-raising and solidarity days concluded Sunday in the city of Erfurt, capital of the German state of Thuringia.
The event was organized in coordination and cooperation between the Sahrawi representations in Saxony and Bavaria and the German organization Die Falken. The third workshop focused on the topic: “The Human Rights and Humanitarian Perspective on Germany’s Role in the Western Sahara Conflict,” addressing an issue that combines moral responsibility with a commitment to international legitimacy.
At the beginning of the workshop, Sahrawi student and human rights activist Khadija Badati delivered a presentation focusing on the economic and ethical responsibilities of German companies. She renewed the call for these companies to withdraw from their investments and projects in the occupied areas of Western Sahara.
The speaker stressed that exploiting the territory’s natural resources, including renewable energy projects, without the consent of the Sahrawi people constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and of the rulings issued by the Court of Justice of the European Union in October 2024.
She also called on the European Union to remain consistent with its principles and values and to stop signing agreements with the Moroccan occupying state that affect the territory, airspace, or territorial waters of Western Sahara.
In the same context, Sahrawi student and human rights activist Khadija Badati expressed hope for a more decisive German role that goes beyond the narrow language of economic interests. She called for Germany’s political weight within the European Union and the United Nations to be used to exert pressure toward the implementation of international law, the protection of human rights, and support for a fair UN-led process that would enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination.
She further called for decision-makers and companies in Germany to adopt positions consistent with the principles of justice.
At the conclusion of the event, the organizers issued an appeal calling for continued discussion of the Sahrawi cause within German society and for intensified efforts to support the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, as well as to support and develop all solidarity initiatives for the Sahrawi cause within the Federal Republic of Germany.
