Gaborone (Botswana), 31 August 2026 (SPS) – The Ministry of International Relations of the Republic of Botswana announced with deep sorrow the passing of His Excellency El Hiba Sidi Abbes, Ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) to Botswana and Permanent Representative to the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Ambassador El Hiba Sidi Abbes passed away on 30 August 2026 at Bokamoso Private Hospital in Gaborone, according to an announcement issued by the Botswana Ministry of International Relations.
Ambassador El Hiba Sidi Abbes began his diplomatic mission in Botswana in January 2026. He was a seasoned Sahrawi diplomat who served his country in various capacities at Sahrawi diplomatic missions in Germany, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Sweden and India.
During his tenure in Botswana, Ambassador El Hiba Sidi Abbes played an instrumental role in strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation between the Republic of Botswana and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
The Government and people of Botswana extended their heartfelt sympathies and deepest condolences to the Government and people of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic following the loss of Ambassador El Hiba Sidi Abbes, wishing him eternal peace.
