Luanda (Angola), August 30, 2026 (SPS) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Yeslem Besset, participated Saturday in the Extraordinary Summit of the African Union Executive Council, held in the Angolan capital, Luanda.
During the meeting, the Foreign Minister addressed the African leaders, outlining the latest developments concerning the Sahrawi cause and providing the proper interpretation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), which upholds the Sahrawi people's right to freedom and self-determination.
He briefed his African counterparts on the dialogue process and the informal preparatory sessions sponsored by the United Nations and the United States of America.
In the same context, the Minister presented the Sahrawi Republic's position on reforming and revitalizing African mechanisms for conflict prevention and mitigation.
He stressed the need to properly and impartially link these mechanisms, on the one hand, to the Constitutive Act of the African Union and, on the other, to the decisions of the latest African Summit held in Johannesburg in 2020, particularly the “Silencing the Guns” initiative, which called on the two AU member parties to engage in dialogue and prepare for the organization of a referendum on the self-determination of the Sahrawi people.
