World Summit of Indigenous Peoples reaffirms solidarity with Sahrawi people and its just cause

Morelos (Mexico), August 22, 2026 (SPS) – The Third World Summit of Indigenous Peoples, which concluded its proceedings in the State of Morelos, Mexico, held from August 18 to 20, reaffirmed its solidarity with the Sahrawi people and its just cause.

The closing session was attended by Abdessalam Omar, President of the Association of Families of Sahrawi Prisoners and Missing Persons, representing the Sahrawi people.

The Sahrawi participation highlighted the right of peoples to self-determination, as enshrined in United Nations General Assembly Resolution 1514, a right that has also been reaffirmed by the International Court of Justice and the European Court of Justice.

During the event, two certificates of appreciation sent by the President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, were presented to the President of the Indigenous Peoples Organization and the organization’s official in charge of international relations.

The certificates conveyed the President’s thanks and appreciation for the support and solidarity expressed by the Indigenous Peoples Organization toward the Sahrawi people and its just cause, as well as for its support for its struggle for the right to self-determination and independence.

For his part, the President of the Indigenous Peoples Organization handed the Sahrawi representative a copy of the statement issued by the organization’s Third Summit. The statement expresses support, solidarity, and a commitment to accompany the struggle of the Sahrawi people until the end of the occupation is achieved.
