Bujumbura (Burundi), 3 July 2026 (SPS) – The Sahrawi Republic is taking part in the proceedings of the Second Conference on Girls' and Women's Education, being held in the Burundian capital under the theme "Africa Educates Her Girls."

The conference has brought together prominent African and international dignitaries, including the Vice-President of Burundi, who officially inaugurated the event, and H.E. Selma Malika Haddadi, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

The conference discussions are being chaired by Professor Gaspard Banyankimbona, African Union Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation.

The Sahrawi Republic is represented at this important continental gathering by the Minister of Social Affairs and the Promotion of Women, Mrs. Suelma Beiruk, who was among the first delegates to address the conference.

In her statement, she highlighted the priority accorded by the Sahrawi State to girls' education throughout the first three compulsory stages of schooling.

She noted that this policy has yielded tangible results, reflected in the significant reduction of illiteracy rates and in the fact that female enrolment in higher education now exceeds that of males.

The Minister also drew attention to the difficult conditions endured by Sahrawi women and girls living under Moroccan occupation, including the denial of their right to education.

The Sahrawi Republic's participation was met with broad appreciation by the countries represented at the conference, culminating in an award in recognition of its significant achievements and sustained efforts in promoting the education of women and girls. (SPS)
