Sahrawi Minister of Foreign and African Affairs received by the president of Botswana

Gaborone (Botswana), 3 July 2026 (SPS)– The Minister of Foreign and African Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, was received Yesterday by the President of the Republic of Botswana, H.E. Duma Gideon Boko, in his capacity as Special Envoy of the President of the Republic and Secretary-General of the Frente POLISARIO, Mr. Brahim Ghali.

During the meeting, which took place at the Presidency in Gaborone, the Minister conveyed to President Boko a message from President Brahim Ghali.

Mr. Mohamed Yeslem Beissat expressed the appreciation and gratitude of the Government and people of the Sahrawi Republic for Botswana's principled and steadfast support for the Sahrawi cause. He also briefed the President on the latest developments concerning the Sahrawi national cause.

For his part, President Duma Gideon Boko extended a warm and special welcome to the Minister of Foreign and African Affairs, reaffirming Botswana's unwavering support for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and their legitimate rights to freedom and dignity.

The President further reiterated Botswana's support for the political process in Western Sahara aimed at achieving peace, stability, and dignity for the people of the territory.

The meeting was attended by Botswana's Minister of International Relations, Dr. Phenyo Butale, the Deputy Sahrawi Ambassador to Botswana, Mr. Mohamed Mbeirik El Kharashi, as well as the Director for Africa at Botswana's Ministry of International Relations.

In the same context, the Minister of Foreign and African Affairs held a working session with Botswana's Minister of International Relations, Dr. Phenyo Butale, at the Ministry's headquarters. During the meeting, Mr. Mohamed Yeslem Beissat thanked the Government of Botswana for its consistent and principled positions in support of the Sahrawi cause in international and regional forums.

The Sahrawi Foreign Minister also briefed his Botswana counterpart on the latest developments regarding the Sahrawi national cause at the United Nations, as well as ongoing international efforts to reach a political solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination.

For his part, Dr. Phenyo Butale reaffirmed that Botswana's position on the Sahrawi question is firmly rooted in the principles of international law and the African Union's commitment to respecting the right of peoples to self-determination.

The Sahrawi Special Envoy concluded his programme in Botswana, accompanied by the Botswana Minister of International Relations, with a joint press engagement at the Presidency. On that occasion, he expressed his appreciation for Botswana's noble and principled support for the Sahrawi people's cause, and congratulated the Government and people of Botswana on their political achievements and economic progress, describing the country as an inspiring model for Southern Africa.

Mr. Mohamed Yeslem Beissat is currently undertaking a tour of several African countries as Special Envoy of the President of the Republic and Secretary-General of the Frente POLISARIO, Mr. Brahim Ghali. During the course of this mission, he has been received by the President of Zimbabwe, the President of Mozambique, the President of Namibia, and the Minister of International Relations of the Republic of Angola.
