Geneva (Switzerland), June 9, 2026 (SPS) – The General Union of Workers of Saguia el-Hamra and Rio de Oro (UGTSARIO) presented Monday a comprehensive briefing in Geneva on the latest developments in the Sahrawi issue and the Sahrawi people’s struggle for freedom and independence.
The briefing was delivered during a meeting of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), held on the sidelines of the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference.
UGTSARIO called on the international trade union movement to strengthen its solidarity with the Sahrawi people and support their legitimate right to self-determination, describing the issue as the last decolonization case on the African continent.
In his address before representatives of dozens of labor unions from various continents, the UGTSARIO Secretary-General of the General, Nafei Ahmed Mohamed, stressed that the continued occupation of Western Sahara is evidence that the process of decolonization has not yet been completed.
He reviewed the experience of UGTSARIO in accompanying and supporting the Sahrawi people's struggle, emphasizing the organization's ongoing efforts to expand its relations with regional and international trade union bodies and to strengthen the presence of the Sahrawi cause within global labor forums.
Mr. Nafei Ahmed Mohamed expressed UGTSARIO’s solidarity with the workers and peoples of Cuba and Venezuela in light of the challenges they face. He stressed that the suffering of peoples subjected to pressure, blockades, and occupation makes it imperative to reinforce the values of international solidarity and joint action among progressive trade union forces.
