AU landmines delegation concludes Mission to the Sahrawi Republic with courtesy visit to the Chief of Staff of the Sahrawi Liberation Army

Chahid El Hafed (Sahrawi Refugee Camps) 21 May 2026 (SPS) – A delegation from the African Union Commission of Mine Action Experts paid a courtesy visit yesterday morning, May 20, to the Chief of Staff of the Sahrawi People’s Liberation Army, Mr. Hamma Salama, at the Sahrawi Ministry of Defense in Chahid El Hafed, concluding a technical mission carried out these last days to review the Sahrawi state’s efforts in mine action.

The Chief of Staff welcomed the African delegation, commending the visit and emphasizing its great importance for the Sahrawi Republic, as it aims to assess the national efforts undertaken in mine action. He stressed that these efforts continue to require greater support and accompaniment, particularly from the African Union.

The Sahrawi official expressed his appreciation for the delegation’s visit, noting that it falls within the framework of examining the Sahrawi experience in mine clearance and in dealing with remnants of war.

In this context, he affirmed that the Sahrawi army has accumulated significant field experience, enabling it to clear numerous minefields in order to save human lives from this scourge planted by the Moroccan army across vast areas of the territory of the Sahrawi Republic.

Mr. Hamma Salama also highlighted the active role played by the Sahrawi state within various African institutions, particularly in the fields of peace and security.

For its part, the African delegation expressed its satisfaction with the visit and its gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to them.

The delegation also praised the technical substance of the mission, which allowed its members to gain detailed insight into the Sahrawi national mine action program, as well as pioneering experiences led by Sahrawi civil society organizations in this field.

It is worth noting that the African delegation specializing in landmines and explosive remnants of war conducted a technical visit to the Sahrawi Republic to examine the Sahrawi mine action program and related efforts.

During the mission, the delegation visited the headquarters of several organizations operating in this field, in addition to the Sahrawi National Office for Mine Action Coordination. (SPS)
