Washington, May 20, 2026 (SPS) – In an interview with the program "Hora América" on Spain’s Exterior Radio, former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton criticized the Trump administration’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, describing the decision as a mistake.

He called for a return to the 1991 United Nations plan and for the organization of a referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people.

Bolton stated that the matter is very simple: people should be allowed to vote and choose what they want.

He rejected attempts by some Republican circles to classify the POLISARIO Front as a terrorist organization, stressing that he had dealt with the movement for 35 years and had never seen any indication of terrorism or links to Iran or Islamist movements.

He concluded by affirming that the Western Sahara issue is not over and that the Sahrawi people have the right to self-determination.

Bolton added that Morocco cannot replace Spain in its strategic role in the Mediterranean region, emphasizing that Spain has always been an important Atlantic power.
