Conference in Madrid on International Legitimacy in Western Sahara

Madrid (Spain), May 6, 2026 (SPS) – The Spanish capital, Madrid, will host on May 22 a conference on international legitimacy in Western Sahara and the need to respect human rights in the occupied territories, with the participation of a select group of judges, lawyers, academics, and Spanish parliamentarians.

The conference, titled “International Legitimacy, Western Sahara, and Commitment to Human Rights,” is organized by prominent judicial and human rights organizations.

The organizing bodies indicated that the event aims to analyze the legal situation in Western Sahara and reaffirm that the Sahrawi issue is a matter of decolonization, while also stressing the need to protect the fundamental rights of the Sahrawi people, foremost among them the right to self-determination and independence.

The conference will include a high-level roundtable to discuss “International Legitimacy in Western Sahara,” with the participation of leading legal experts and professors of international law from Spanish universities, as well as the Polisario Front representative in Spain, Abdulah Arabi.

The event will also feature interventions by judges, lawyers, and academics specializing in international law and closely following the human rights situation in occupied Western Sahara.
