Shaheed El Hafed, April 17, 2026 (SPS) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that the visit of the French ambassador to Morocco to the occupied city of El Aaiun constitutes a new chapter in the aggression against the Sahrawi people and undermines international efforts to find a fair and just solution to the Sahrawi issue.

In a statement, the Ministry stressed that this visit represents a concrete contribution to attempts to undermine the efforts of the international community to reach a just and fair solution to the Western Sahara issue, and reflects further defiance of the will of the international community.

Statement

The visit carried out by the French ambassador to Morocco to the occupied city of El Aaiun in Western Sahara is another provocative step added by the colonial State of France to its record of violations and breaches of international law and international legitimacy resolutions concerning Western Sahara, which remains a decolonization issue.

This visit is a French attempt to invest in the tensions in the region and to push them toward further conflict and escalation. Through this disgraceful behavior, France makes itself a party involved in supporting and encouraging the Moroccan occupation to continue its policies of expansion, occupation, intransigence, human rights violations in Western Sahara, plundering of resources, and breaches of international legitimacy.

The Polisario Front expresses its strong condemnation and denunciation of this visit by the French ambassador, Christophe Lecourtier, to the occupied city of El Aaiun, considering it a new chapter of aggression against the Sahrawi people and an attempt to entrench the colonial status quo pursued by the Moroccan occupation regime.

Through this conduct, France betrays its duty and responsibility as a member of the UN Security Council and violates its role in maintaining international peace and security.

The visit of the French ambassador to the occupied city of El Aaiun, along with previous visits by French officials in various economic and cultural sectors, is another attempt to encourage the Moroccan occupation in its expansionist policy and its claims to sovereignty—claims that neither France nor any other party can grant. The Polisario Front reiterates that the sole and legitimate holder of sovereignty over Western Sahara is the Sahrawi people alone.

This visit also constitutes a concrete contribution to attempts to undermine international efforts to find a fair and impartial solution to the Western Sahara issue, and represents further defiance of the will of the international community.

In conclusion, no matter how deeply France becomes involved in supporting the Moroccan occupation war in Western Sahara, this will only strengthen the Sahrawi people’s determination and commitment to their inalienable rights to freedom and independence, and to building their independent State—the Sahrawi Republic—which is a factor of balance and stability in the region.

France has another role to play beyond investing in war, tension, and spreading hostility among the peoples of the Maghreb. Its true role is to build a just peace, bring viewpoints closer together, defend legitimacy and justice, and uphold international law."
