Shaheed El-Hafed, March 16, 2026 (SPS) – The National Council organized Monday an open day on the role and functions of the legislative institution as part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Republic.
The event was attended by the President of the Republic and Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, along with members of the National Secretariat, the government, the National Council, and representatives from various national institutions.
During the open day, the member of the National Secretariat, President of the National Council, Mr. Hamma Salama, emphasized the historic role of the National Council in laying the first foundations of the Sahrawi state, achieving a final break with Spanish colonialism and its nominal institutions, and confronting the partition conspiracy pursued by Spanish colonialism through the ill-fated Madrid Agreement.
Hamma Salama highlighted that the National Council has made significant progress in building the State’s legislative and oversight institution through the legal frameworks it has adopted, which have enhanced its effectiveness and helped organize its work and activities.
He also noted its contribution to improving and advancing government performance through field visits, meetings, correspondence, and communications, as well as by submitting written questions and exercising its constitutional powers of accountability and oversight over the executive branch, in addition to implementing, improving, and evaluating approved programs in accordance with the powers granted by the constitution and other governing laws.
At the conclusion of the open day dedicated to the Sahrawi National Council, participants organized a solidarity vigil with civilian prisoners in Moroccan occupation prisons, calling for their unconditional release and reaffirming their support in the struggle for freedom led by the Sahrawi people to achieve full national sovereignty.
