Opening of 39th African Union Summit

Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), February 14, 2026 (SPS) – The 39th Summit of the African Union officially opened today, Saturday, in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

The Prime Minister, member of the National Secretariat, Bouchraya Hammoudi Bayoun, attended the summit representing the President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali.

Peace and security top the summit’s agenda. African leaders are set to examine the report of the Peace and Security Council on the general situation across the continent, in addition to special reports on developments in Libya, Sudan, Somalia, and Mali. They will also consider proposals aimed at supporting stability in those countries, as well as ways to strengthen cooperation between the African Union and regional economic communities in the field of security interventions.

Economic integration is also a major focus of discussions. Leaders will review a report on the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area and exchange views on mechanisms to enhance intra-African trade and increase joint investments within the continent.

Accompanying the Prime Minister during the two-day summit is a delegation that includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, Mohamed Yeslem Beissat; the Minister of Social Affairs and Women’s Promotion, Suilma Beirouk; the Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Lamman Abaali; the Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Maa El-Ainin Lakhal; and the Media and Cultural Attaché at the Sahrawi Embassy in Ethiopia, Argebi Abdallah.
