Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), February 11, 2026 (SPS) – The proceedings of the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union began on Wednesday in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, with the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Yeslem Beissat.
This ministerial meeting, convened in preparation for the 39th African Union Summit scheduled for February 14 and 15, will discuss a range of issues and files related to the role and importance of joint African action in addressing the major political, security, and developmental challenges facing the continent.
Participants will also proceed with the election of ten members to the African Union Peace and Security Council, in addition to the election and appointment of three members to the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the election and appointment of seven members to the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs is accompanied by a delegation including the Ambassador of the Sahrawi Republic and its Permanent Representative to the African Union and Ethiopia, Mr. Lamine Baali; the Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative, Mr. Malainin Lakhal; and the Media and Cultural Attaché, Mr. Ergaibi Abdallah.
On the sidelines of the session, the Sahrawi delegation held several bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of African Union member states to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation and support issues of peace and stability across the continent.
