Ait Melloul, 6 February 2026 (SPS) – The family of the Sahrawi civilian prisoner Ahmetou Lekouiri, held at Ait Melloul 1 Prison, reported that he is living under difficult and harsh conditions due to the policy of repression and ill-treatment pursued by the prison administration of the occupying authorities.

The family indicated that their son is detained alongside common-law prisoners, despite his repeated requests for segregation in view of his status as a political prisoner. This situation exposes him to psychological and physical risks, especially given the presence of inmates involved in serious criminal cases.

They added that he is subjected to daily degrading searches marked by humiliation and ill-treatment, further worsening his suffering inside the prison facility.

His situation at Ait Melloul 1 Prison remains alarming in light of the continued deterioration of his health and the absence of any medical intervention for several months.

According to the family, these harsh conditions are part of a systematic policy adopted by the prison administration of the occupying authorities against Sahrawi political prisoners, involving harassment and the denial of their basic rights—foremost among them the right to medical care and humane treatment.
