Kampala, 28 October 2025 (SPS) - The Uganda Solidarity Movement with Western Sahara has strongly condemned the United States' draft resolution on Western Sahara circulated to the UN Security Council, describing it a blatant deviation from established international law and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, in a statement today, Tuesday.

This is a full read of the statement:

“The Uganda Solidarity Movement with Western Sahara strongly condemns the United States' draft resolution on Western Sahara circulated to the UN Security Council, which represents a blatant deviation from established international law and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter. By elevating Morocco's autonomy proposal as the exclusive framework for negotiations and sidelining the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination, this draft undermines decades of UN commitments, including the 1991 ceasefire agreement and the mandate of MINURSO to facilitate a free and fair referendum on Independence.

We reaffirm that the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and national Independence is non-negotiable, as affirmed by numerous UN General Assembly and Security Council resolutions, as well as the International Court of Justice's 1975 advisory opinion. The United States, as a permanent member of the Security Council and a founding signatory to the UN Charter, has a solemn obligation to uphold these legal imperatives rather than prioritizing bilateral deals or geopolitical expediency that perpetuate occupation and deny decolonization.

We call upon the US government to immediately withdraw or revise this draft to align with international law, respect the sovereignty aspirations of the Sahrawi people, and support the long-overdue referendum under UN auspices. Anything less betrays the universal commitment to justice and erodes the credibility of multilateral institutions.

The Uganda Solidarity Movement stands in unwavering solidarity with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and its people in their struggle for freedom and dignity. Self-determination is not a concession—it is a right that must be honored

In Solidarity,

Emmanuel Clark Tulengera

Chairperson, Uganda Solidarity Movement with Western Sahara”.
