(Bir Lehlou, Sahrawi Republic, 27 October 2025) SPS – As the Security Council continues its consultations on the US “draft resolution” on the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), the Frente POLISARIO today issued a statement reaffirming its position on the “draft resolution” as well as its categorical rejection of any approach that sets a prefixed framework for the negotiations or predetermines their outcome, circumscribes the free exercise by the Sahrawi people of their right to self-determination, or imposes a solution against their will.

STATEMENT

[Bir Lehlou, Sahrawi Republic, 27 October 2025] - The Frente POLISARIO is closely following the ongoing consultations on the “draft resolution” circulated, on 22 October 2025, to the Members of the Security Council by the Permanent Mission of the United States of America as the penholder on the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

As it stressed in its letter addressed to the President of the Security Council on 23 October 2025, the Frente POLISARIO reaffirms its categorical rejection of any approach that sets a prefixed framework for the negotiations or predetermines their outcome, circumscribes the free exercise by the Sahrawi people of their right to self-determination, or imposes a solution against their will.

In this regard, the Frente POLISARIO reaffirms strongly that it will not engage in any political process or negotiations based on any proposals, regardless of where they originate, which aim to “legitimise” Morocco’s illegal military occupation of Western Sahara and deprive the Sahrawi people of their inalienable, non-negotiable, and imprescriptible right to self-determination and sovereignty over their homeland.

The Frente POLISARIO recalls that it submitted an expanded Proposal to the UN Secretary-General on 20 October 2025 as a goodwill gesture and in response to Security Council resolutions. It reiterates that it remains ready to engage in direct negotiations with the other party, if it has genuine political will to do the same and to move away from status quo-based and unilaterally imposed solutions that will only lead to further tension and jeopardising peace, security and stability in the entire region.

The Frente POLISARIO emphatically stresses that just and enduring peace in our region can never be achieved by rewarding expansionism and the acquisition of territory by force but by defending the fundamental principles of international law, including peoples’ inalienable right to exercise self-determination under optimal conditions of freedom, impartiality and transparency and without any form of outside interference.

The Frente POLISARIO again urges all Members of the Security Council to use their leverage constructively to create the necessary conditions for the two parties, the Frente POLISARIO and Morocco, to engage in serious, credible, and time-bound negotiations, without preconditions and in good faith,  under the UN auspices, with a view to achieving a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution, which will provide for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara in accordance with the principles and purposes of the UN Charter and its relevant resolutions.
