Banjul (Gambia), October 24, 2025 (SPS) – Mr. Laaroussi Abdallah, Director of the Human Rights Department at the Sahrawi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, called on the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) to “break the silence” and take serious action to confront human rights violations in the occupied Western Sahara.

He stressed that any neglect or absence of the Commission from fulfilling its duties “will not serve its noble mission of protecting the African person from all forms of injustice and oppression.”

In his speech delivered this evening before participants at the 85th Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, held in the Gambian capital, Banjul, the representative of the Sahrawi Republic urged the Commission to implement the decisions of the African Union, particularly those calling for the dispatch of a fact-finding mission to the Sahrawi Republic and the occupied territories, “away from politicization and double standards.”

Mr. Abdallah further pointed out that “the Sahrawi Republic, despite being the last colony in Africa and despite suffering a military occupation supported by France and Israel, has undertaken wide-ranging structural reforms to ensure respect for human rights, expand freedoms, and entrench the values of justice and equality.”

He concluded by calling for “joint efforts among member states and civil society organizations” to build a free Africa whose peoples enjoy their rights and contribute to “building a dignified and honorable human civilization for all.”
