
Banjul (The Gambia), October 21, 2025 (SPS) – The Sahrawi Republic, represented by Mr. Laaroussi Abdallah, Director of the Human Rights Department at the Sahrawi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is participating in the opening of the 85th Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, held today, Tuesday, in the capital of The Gambia, Banjul.
The opening session was marked by the announcement of the new leadership of the Commission, with Commissioner Idrissa Sow appointed as the new Chairperson, and Commissioner Hatem Essaim as his Deputy.
During the opening session, statements were delivered by representatives of the Gambian government, the African Union Commission, the Pan-African Parliament, as well as representatives from UN and European Union human rights bodies, alongside delegates from the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights and various African human rights committees.
The session also brings together representatives from states parties to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, national human rights commissions, civil society organizations, and prominent African human rights figures.
