New York (United Nations), October 6, 2025 (SPS) – Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, member of the National Secretariat, Polisario Front Representative at the United Nations, and Coordinator with MINURSO, met on Monday with Mr. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations.

During the meeting, which took place at the UN Secretariat headquarters, several issues related to the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) were discussed. The Sahrawi diplomat briefed the Under-Secretary-General on the position of the Polisario Front regarding these matters and other related issues.

The operational situation of the mission was also addressed, particularly in light of Morocco’s violation of the ceasefire since November 13, 2020, and its continued use of various types of weapons — including drones — to kill Sahrawi civilians and civilians from neighboring countries passing through the liberated Sahrawi territories. The use of internationally banned thermal weapons was also highlighted.

The UN Security Council is expected to hold a closed-door consultation session, chaired by the Russian Federation, on October 10 to discuss MINURSO. Council members will hear briefings from Mr. Staffan de Mistura, the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara, and Mr. Alexander Ivanko, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of MINURSO.
