Algeria reiterates its firm position in support of UN efforts for just settlement of Western Sahara issue that guarantees Sahrawi people's right to self-determination

New York (United Nations), 26 September 2025 (SPS) - The Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf met, Thursday in New York, with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, as part of his participation in the high-level segment of the United Nations General Assembly (GA), the ministry said in a press release.

The meeting which follows the discussions held between the two parties on September 16 in Algiers, enabled “discussing the developments of the Sahrawi cause, in anticipation of the Security Council meeting on the Western Sahara question scheduled for next October,” according to the press release.

In this regard, Attaf reaffirmed “Algeria’s constant position in favor of UN efforts aimed at achieving a just, lasting and definitive settlement to the Western Sahara question, capable of guaranteeing the Sahrawi people the exercise of their inalienable and imprescriptible right to auto-determination,” added the press release.
