Algiers, 18 September 2025 (SPS) – The Delegation of the European Union in Algeria and the World Food Programme (WFP) praised Algeria's role in addressing the needs of Sahrawi refugees in the Tindouf camps on Tuesday in Algiers.
"For over 50 years, Algeria has shown exemplary generosity by hosting Sahrawi refugees, and for nearly 40 years the WFP has been by its side, providing vital food and nutritional assistance," stated the WFP Representative and Country Director in Algeria, Aline Rumonge, during an event meant to reaffirm the EU Delegation in Algeria's commitment to the Sahrawi refugees by continuing its funding to the UN agency.
Highlighting that 80% of Sahrawi refugees depend entirely on humanitarian aid, she furthermore praised the EU's unwavering support and its commitment to this population, noting that their "strong and reliable partnership provides the necessary sustainable funding to deliver vital assistance while improving the efficiency of WFP operations in the camps."
For his part, the Ambassador of the European Union (EU) in Algeria, Diego Mellado Pascua, also emphasized Algeria's generosity towards the Sahrawi refugees over many years, while announcing that a few weeks ago the EU transferred a European contribution of around 5 million euros - for the second year of the multi-annual partnership - to reiterate the Europeans' commitment to the Sahrawi people.
The President of the Red Crescent of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), Yahia Bouhbini, for his part, stated in a declaration to APS that today's event was an opportunity to launch an appeal to all donors to make contributions in favor of the Sahrawi refugees.
