Bir Lehlou (Liberated Territories), 6 September 2025 (SPS) - The Sahrawi Government affirmed that the joint UN-OAU Settlement Plan is the only practical and reasonable agreement to reach a peaceful, just, and lasting solution.

The Sahrawi Government, in a Communiqué today issued by the Ministry of Information, reiterated Frente POLISARIO’s readiness to engage constructively and positively in the UN-sponsored peace process in Western Sahara. In this regard, it further reiterated that the UN-OAU Settlement Plan, which was mutually accepted by both parties, the Frente POLISARIO and Morocco, in 1988 and unanimously approved by the Security Council in its resolutions 658 (1990) and 690 (1991) is the only mutually accepted compromise-based, practical, and reasonable agreement for achieving a peaceful, just, and lasting solution.

Communiqué

The Security Council is scheduled to meet in October to consider the report of the Secretary-General on the situation concerning Western Sahara and to vote on a new resolution to extend the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

The upcoming meeting of the Security Council on Western Sahara provides a valuable opportunity to reaffirm the core mandate of MINURSO, as established by the Security Council in 1991, and the fundamental principle that must underpin the peaceful, just and lasting solution, namely the free and democratic exercise by the Sahrawi people of their inalienable right to self-determination and independence in accordance with the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and its relevant resolutions.

The SADR Ministry of Information reiterates the Frente POLISARIO’s readiness to engage constructively and positively in the UN-sponsored peace process in Western Sahara. In this regard, it further reiterates that the UN-OAU Settlement Plan, which was mutually accepted by both parties, the Frente POLISARIO and Morocco, in 1988 and unanimously approved by the Security Council in its resolutions 658 (1990) and 690 (1991) is the only mutually accepted compromise-based, practical, and reasonable agreement for achieving a peaceful, just, and lasting solution.

The SADR Ministry of Information underlines that all international and regional organisations and courts do not recognise any sovereignty for Morocco, the occupying state, over Western Sahara. Therefore, any unilateral solution that aims to “legitimise” the Moroccan illegal occupation of Western Sahara and undermine the sovereign will of the Sahrawi people and their inalienable right to self-determination and independence is not only unacceptable in toto, but it is also very dangerous for peace, security and stability in the entire region.

The SADR Ministry of Information reminds all those who are genuinely concerned about stability and security in Northwest Africa that enduring peace in our region can never be achieved by condoning expansionism and the acquisition of territory by force, but by defending the fundamental principles of international law, including peoples’ sacrosanct and non-derogable right to self-determination and freedom.

The SADR Ministry of Information urges all key international stakeholders, including Permanent Members of the Security Council, to use their influence constructively and purposefully to help advance the UN-sponsored peace process in Western Sahara by empowering and supporting MINURSO to fully implement its mandate and conclude the decolonisation of Western Sahara, the last colony in Africa.
