Washington, 2 July 2025 (SPS) – The Global Monitoring Center affirmed its opposition and rejection of the efforts of the Moroccan lobby in the United States aimed at distorting the legitimate struggle of the Sahrawi people.
In a letter addressed to U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer, the Global Monitoring Center exposed the "concerns raised by the inaccurate information and claims propagated by the Moroccan lobby in the United States, as well as attempts to exploit them" to tarnish the image of the Polisario Front by linking it to terrorism and extremist groups.
The Center warned of the "danger of misinformation and fallacy in distorting the just struggle of the Sahrawi people, which undermines the prospects for peace, justice, democracy, and self-determination." It emphasized that any attempt to associate the Polisario Front's struggle with terrorism is a "suspect narrative within the broader context of the Western Sahara conflict."
The letter referenced recent statements by former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton, who described such allegations as a "propaganda ploy to divert attention from Morocco’s continued obstruction of a (self-determination) referendum in Western Sahara."
The Center stressed that the Polisario Front is a recognized national liberation movement by the United Nations and the African Union, not an extremist group. Founded in 1973, its mission was to end colonial domination in Western Sahara and lead the Sahrawi people to independence.
It noted that the UN General Assembly and the African Union recognize the Polisario Front as the legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people, with full membership in the African Union under the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) as a founding state.
In this regard, the Center stated that such international recognition "would not exist if the Polisario were a terrorist group. On the contrary, this recognition affirms its role as an indigenous liberation movement rooted in the right to self-determination."
Finally, the Center emphasized that the Polisario Front has "demonstrated a strong commitment to international norms and law, formally endorsing the Geneva Conventions and their protocols, as well as the African Union Convention on Counterterrorism, and adheres to international humanitarian law in its conduct."
